Bluebonnets have been the Texas state flowers for almost 120 years. To welcome the new decade, bluebonnets are beginning to blossom earlier than normal. It is believed to be due to the unusually high temperatures in January of this year. This makes the bluebonnet arrival several weeks in advance than the typical March/April appearance.

If you’re looking for bluebonnets, you’ll want to find somewhere full of sunshine and well-drained, slightly moist soil. During this part of the growing process, bluebonnets are growing a large mass of roots, so be careful if you decide to walk through a field of these flowers.

According to ABC13 of Houston, locations for bluebonnet sightings for the next few weeks are as follows:

Along I-10 west of Katy
Texas Hill Country
Lake Buchanan
Travis County
Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands
