Crime Stoppers of Southeast Texas celebrated 40 years of service to the community, connecting law enforcement, media and the public to solve crimes and put their perpetrators behind bars.

During the nonprofit’s annual event on Oct. 21, local law enforcement agencies recognized media partners, including The Examiner, and members of the public who go above and beyond to provide assistance and information to local law enforcement.

“Being a Crime Stopper of the Year is something that is very special. You’re recognized by a law enforcement agency,” Campus Crime Stoppers Director Jeremy Raley said. “When you’re in a county or municipality, that’s a hard decision. There are a lot of people in those areas. So, when you receive this award, I ask that you really think about it... They chose you.”

The five Crime Stoppers of the Year awarded at the event are: Edgar Maddox, selected by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office; Shera LaPoint, selected by the Beaumont Police Department; Jody Holton, selected by the Port Arthur Police Department; J.W. Dalton, selected by the Orange Count Sheriff’s Office; and Brodie Fischer, selected by the Vidor Police Department.

Crime Stoppers Board Member Larry Crumpton thanked the awardees and the media for assisting law enforcement in their vital endeavors. Crumpton compared the organization to “a three-legged stool,” with three teams working in conjunction to keep the community upright.

“We have to have the people who call in the tips. We have to have out law enforcement because they’re the ones who do the work for us. But where would be without our media? Media is so important to us,” said Crumpton. “It’s a real honor to me to reach out to our media partners tonight because I’ve been in media, and this will be my 50th year in media. I’ve enjoyed it, and I know the power of what media can do.”
