In concert with National Police Week, a crowd of family, friends and residents gathered to honor fallen officers of the Beaumont Police Department in front of their station May 13.

Saying there hasn't been a more staunch supporter of his department than the memorial's guest speaker, BPD Police Chief Jimmy Singletary introduced Mayor Becky Ames, who said this event will be among those she misses the most when her mayoral tenure ends.

"The thin blue line is a family," she said, "and as a civilian, if you were allowed in, you were shown much love. Each and every day, men and women in law enforcement work to keep us safe. It is a heavy burden -- a very heavy burden these days while trying to balance impossible expectations. Without their sacrifice, there'd be no justice."

Officers first honored their most recent fallen colleague, Officer Sheena Yarbrough-Powell, by placing a blue flower at the BPD fallen officer memorial. Yarbrough-Powell was killed Aug. 9, 2020, in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. In all, BPD honored 18 of its fallen officers Thursday morning, including: Bryan Mitchell Hebert, Lisa Beaulieu, James Michael Lane, Conrad Sudario Gernale, Paul Douglas Hulsey Jr., Danny Dean Richmond, Patrice Bruce Hunt, Jack L. Pickering, Ronny Lee Garcia, Henry N. Williams, Revis J. Landry, Gordon Udell Warrick, James A. Davis, Clarence Brammer, Byron Merrit, Walter W. Stansbury and William E. Patterson.
