With a measure aimed to open more Beaumont businesses, the city council unanimously approved a motion April 5 to allow restaurants to use their parking lots as outdoor seating areas, pending permit approval.

This will allow restaurants more room to spread out patrons, although they will still be limited to serving 25% of their listed capacity, according to the measure read by Chris Boone, director of planning and community development, who admitted every restaurant may not have the space to take advantage of this 90-day permit.

Although the order took effect immediately following its approval Tuesday afternoon, Boone says this will become more important when Governor Gregg Abbott allows restaurants to serve a greater percentage of their capacities.
