Kelly's Williams qualifies for TAPPS state golf championship

Sophomore standout Reece Williams of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School delivered an exceptional performance at the TAPPS 5A South Regional Championship at River Crossing Golf Club. Williams shot an even-par 72, securing a second-place individual finish and earning a coveted spot in the upcoming TAPPS 5A state championship.

“Reece showed incredible maturity and toughness today," said coach Rog Long. "He stayed patient, stuck to his game plan, and delivered under pressure. He’s worked tirelessly all year and today was another example of the competitor he is. Finishing ahead of some of the best players in the state shows just how far Reece has come. He’s earned every bit of this opportunity, and we’re excited to see him compete against the very best next week."

The Bulldogs boys golf team delivered a commendable performance, securing a fifth place finish with a team total of 312 narrowly missing advancement to the state tournament by just two strokes.

Individually, Greyson Petru of Cypress Christian School captured the regional title with a remarkable 3-under-par 69 and has committed to play collegiate golf at Sam Houston State University next fall. Following closely behind, Williams’ even-par 72 secured 2nd place after a playoff.

The Bulldogs’ full team performance:

Senior captain Julian Mathews finished 21st overall with a 79 in his final high school tournament.
Sophomore Christian Mathews posted an 80, earning 24th place.
Sophomore Lucian Mazzola carded an 81 to finish 26th.
Freshman Skylyn Fisher contributed an 85, placing 38th.

“Our boys put forth a tremendous effort, and it really showed in the results," said Long. "To come this close to advancing is a testament to the hard work they’ve put in all season. Reece’s performance was outstanding, and the contributions from everyone — from our seniors to our underclassmen — show just how bright the future is for Kelly Catholic golf.”

All eyes now turn to Williams as he prepares to represent the Bulldogs at the TAPPS 5A state championship May 5-6 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Club in Waco.
