A pair of Port Arthur men were indicted for murder May 11 after a “combative conversation” in a McDonald’s parking lot turned deadly.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Darryl Dwayne Prevost, 19, and Darionte Kelvon Everfield, 20, after the latter allegedly got into an argument with a victim who – detectives say – the former shot and killed.

Just before 11 p.m. Thursday April, 14, Groves Police Department (GPD) officers arrived in the McDonald’s parking lot at 4500 Twin City Highway. Officers located near the front entrance a silver 2017 Chevrolet Impala that had damage “consistent with bullet damage from a firearm.”

Officers located a black man lying face down near the drive-thru menus, and although officers enacted life-saving measures on the victim, he died after arriving at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital.

According to McDonalds’ surveillance footage viewed by officers, a red Dodge Journey entered the parking lot at about 10:43 p.m. The driver was identified as Everfield by McDonalds’ employees who work with his family. Officers say Everfield parked in an adjacent space to the Impala, which had not arrived yet, before entering the restaurant.

“At approximately 10:46 p.m., the silver Impala arrived, and the driver remained inside the vehicle,” detectives wrote. “At approximately 10:47 p.m., the suspect who entered the business (Everfield) exited McDonalds and approached the silver Impala. (He) looked closely through the front windshield of the vehicle, then the driver of the silver Impala exited.

“The two men stood within inches of each other, in between their two vehicles and appeared to have a combative conversation that lasted a brief period.”

Soon after, the suspect walked away a short distance before the footage shows multiple bright flashes originating from his vehicle. Police say they could see multiple shots fired at the victim as he fled.

“Meanwhile, the driver of the Dodge Journey hurried to the driver seat, placed the vehicle in reverse, and then fled the scene while the shooting suspect remained inside the vehicle,” reads the indictment.

As of press time, Everfield was listed on the Jefferson County inmate roster with a $515,000 bond after his April 24 arrest. His alleged accomplice, Prevost, was also listed on the roster after his April 29 arrest; his bond was set at $801,500.
