San Diego rockers sell out Houston's House of Blues
“We are, we are…. the youth of the nation,
We are, we are…. youth of the nation.”
Never once described or thought of as “just another band.” P.O.D. has been making music for more than 25 years, but not just any music. Influential albums, songs filled with impactful lyrics have certainly withstood the test of time. Anytime the San Diego rockers are within our time zone, we go.
P.O.D., short for Payable on Death, returned to Houston on May 30 as headliners of the “I Got That Tour” and performed a 17-song set to a standing-room-only House of Blues crowd in downtown Houston. Young to old (Yes, we are 49 so we can say old), P.O.D.’s fanbase is as loyal as they come.
We’ve been fans since the early ‘90s as we first got our hands on the album, “The Fundamental Elements of Southtown” that included a hidden track as well as an amazing version of U2’s “Bullet the Blue Sky.” We also remember seeing a 2005 video of a young Katy Perry performing background vocals in “Goodbye For Now.” Songs like “Satellite,” “Youth of a Nation,” “Boom,” “Alive” and “Southtown” were mainstays on commercial radio and their CDs rarely ejected from our detachable faceplate car stereos. If that wasn’t enough, their videos were massive favorites on MTV.
What we really love about P.O.D. is their passion and desire to release new music yet it never felt rushed, either.
Sonny Sandoval (vocalist) and his vintage dreadlocks, Marcos Curiel (guitarist) and Traa Daniels (bass) were celebrating their 11th studio album, “Veritas,” which was released May 3 on Mascot Records. The always high-energy live show featured five tracks from the new record – “I Got That,” “I Won’t Bow Down,” “Afraid to Die” and the opener, “Drop.”
The band also did a phenomenal job with the setlist. We even got “Going in Blind” from their "Greatest Hits record." You know you’ve been to a bad ass concert when you leave the room with the loss of your physical voice, and several T-shirts.
Bad Wolves, Norma Jean and Blind Channel were direct support.
