Days before the invention of air condition, folks in the city of New Orleans did their best to keep cool, and remain stylish, in the summer time heat by wearing white linen clothing. As “The Big Easy” looked for ways to keep tourism returning to their art district in August, as well as showcase summer fashion as summer came to an end, the Warehouse District launched a night to support the arts featuring wine, art showcasing, dining, plus modeling of the latest in white-linen fashion in 1994 and titled it “White Linen Night.”

It was nearly 100 years ago when Beaumont Community Players was founded as “Beaumont Little Theatre” in 1925. With no viable indoor cooling systems available, community members found creative ways to avoid the heat. Since the color white reflects heat, while linen clothing became a staple fashion among the locals during the warm summer months.

The 2020 pandemic wreaked havoc on the art scene so in turn, BCP created its own one-of-kind fundraiser, “White Linen Night,” the following year. With consecutive successful campaigns, BCP will once again host their third annual fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 12, from 7-11 p.m. on the grounds of the Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts (4155 Laurel Ave.).

Modeled after the famed event that takes place every summer in New Orleans, don your white linen duds, or favorite summer fashion, and join the community to celebrate the arts in Southeast Texas. Peruse original creations for sale from dozens of local artists while sipping on a signature white linen margarita cocktail, enjoying a craft beer experience, wine and soft drinks. Feast on savory and sweet treats from an array of food vendors and food trucks. Relax under the tents near a fan and enjoy entertainment ranging from BCP performers to the popular Flava band.

“It’s a true celebration of the arts for a fantastic cause,” said Derek McWilliams, this year’s chair and current BCP baord member. “It truly sheds a light on all the great local talent we have in Southeast Texas. You don’t have to drive to Houston or Dallas to see great art.”

Early bird tickets are available online for $25 at beaumontstages.com. Tickets may be purchased the evening of the event for $30. Special VIP tickets are $100 per person or $150 per couple, which includes access to lounge area, food, and open bar.

All funds raised will support programs at Beaumont Community Players.

“No doubt it will be hot,” added McWilliams, “But if you don’t have white linen, you can wear something ‘beachy’ or for men, something like a Magellan shirt.”

BCP’s history dates back to 1925. Creating some of the most multi-culturally diverse programming in Southeast Texas, the nonprofit organization performed in spaces all throughout the city with the Symphony of Southeast Texas, Beaumont Civic Ballet and Lamar University.

From the 1990s through 2007, BCP larger musical productions required substantial staging along with additional audience seating capacity and were produced at the Jefferson Theatre, while smaller shows were performed at the former Tyrrell Park Elementary School. In 2007, BCP moved into its new home at the Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts.

Boasting an annual subscription season in addition to an extensive children’s summer program titled KIDmunity, BCP is the only nonprofit community-based performance organization providing year-round programming and educational services.

The 99th season begins Sept. 15 with “9 to 5 The Musical;” Oct. 20 with “Chicken & Biscuits;” Nov. 24 with “A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens;” Dec. 26 with “America’s Sweethearts Christmas;” Jan. 19 with “Beehive The ‘60s Musical;” Feb. 23 with “The Miracle Worker;” April 5 with “Grand Horizons;” and May 10 with “The Wizard of Oz.”
