The less fortunate in Beaumont rely heavily on the many programs Some Other Place has to offer. Founded in 1968 by the local religious community to address the unmet emergency needs of local residents, Some Other Place was created to give people looking for assistance somewhere to turn when they were told by other entities to go to “some other place” from relief.

Now it’s time for SOP to turn to the community for help during their only fundraising endeavor of the year – A Tasting for Some Other Place – Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 5-7 p.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center.

A $10 ticket gets you inside the where you can taste bite-sized food samples from more than 40 local businesses, churches and organizations, while listening to the groovy sounds of musical act, Mid-Life Crisis. Children, under the age of 6, are in free. A silent auction will also be held, which includes art work from local artist, Mike Cacioppo.

“It’s a fun night that helps spread awareness of the fantastic work of Some Other Place,” said Sandra Clark, SOP board member. “We need the community’s support. A Tasting helps us keep our doors open. This is our only fundraiser, so we are very thankful for the many generous underwriters and all the volunteers who help move mountains to make this magical event happen.”

What’s on the menu?

Patrons can enjoy onion souffle, Buffalo chicken cheese dip, seasoned meatballs, brisket bites, Mardi Gras gumbo, salads, cheese balls, links, potato casserole, hot wings, Courville’s pork tenderloin, jambalaya, pulled pork, red beans and rice, spinach dip, Cajun shrimp, St. Mark’s Famous Chili, Hawaiian meat balls, fire and ice pickles, and cowboy stew from Cooks Two Dozen. Of course plenty of sweets will be made available like cookies, brownies, sawdust pie and strawberry shortcake. Coca-Cola products, TexJoy coffee bar and water will be waiting for those who need to quinch their thirst.

Booths will be judged by Beaumont Mayor Roy West along with council members Randy Feldchau and AJ Turner.

Thousands of dollars have been raised each year to help to ensure the continuation of the work of Some Other Place. Not only are emergency services available, but SOP also provides ongoing programs such as home-delivered meals, the Anne Rogers Vaxler Nutrition Center, Henry’s Place (breakfast, showers, laundry services), the Back-to-School Program giving nearly 1,000 area students clothes and school supplies, Betty Kubala Resource Center, Miriam B. Rogers Community Center, John Terry Moore Thanksgiving Store and the Christmas “Giving Tree” Program, all of which provide assistance at no charge.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Some Other Place (590 Center St., Beaumont), and participating congregations/businesses (just look for the green sign) or at the door of the event.
