A nest with a view

Lamar University invites prospective students and their families to Cardinal View on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside of the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center and the Setzer Student Center on the LU campus.

Cardinal View is LU’s largest open house event every spring and fall semester, where attendees have the opportunity to tour the university campus and learn about academic majors, financial aid, scholarship opportunities, student organizations, campus and community resources, and more.

“We can’t wait to host prospective students and their guests on campus,” Angela Fanette, director of the LU Welcome Center, said. “Our hope is to showcase every opportunity available to students here at Lamar University for an in depth look at the college experience.”

In addition to the guided tours, academic showcases and the campus resource fair, attendees will also be entered into a contest for a chance to win multiple tuition credits throughout the day.

“Our colleges are highlighting a number of majors that are offered in their academic programming sessions; there will be campus resources, housing, financial aid, campus tours and admissions sessions all available as well,” Fanette said. “We can’t wait for prospective students to see what life is like at LU.”

Fanette, a 2002 graduate of Lamar University herself, said that she had several college options, but Lamar was a very easy choice for her.

“I looked at other schools out of state,” said Fanette. “Lamar is right here in my backyard, and it was a very valuable education. It’s right here in my backyard and a very valuable education. I was a theatre major at Lamar, and I thoroughly enjoyed but switched my major to public health. Although it was not the track I finished, it definitely prepared me for events, communication and allowing me to carry myself well.

“The campus sure has changed. The first time I came back, it was jaw-dropping. The buildings are beautiful. Lamar offers prospective students everything that is the best thing about a four-year university experience, but with a hometown, personalized feel. Smaller classes, more one-on-one time and a lot of support. I experienced it both a student and now as a staff member.”

Prospective students will also have an opportunity to visit with current LU students and faculty about getting involved on campus.

“Cardinal View is as close as you can get to experiencing what your years as a potential student will be like at Lamar University,” Miguel Arevalo, LU Crew member, said. “Seeing how all the students involved on campus with student organizations at the fair interact with each other gives a glimpse into what it’s like to be a part of a community-like culture that is found at Lamar University.”

The Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is located at 4405 Jimmy Simmons Blvd. on the LU campus.
