A fascinating look at Galveston’s newest exhibit

From organs to muscles to the nervous system and to skeletal structures, “Body World RX: Prescriptions for Healthy Living,” gives an unprecedented look inside the most sophisticated mechanism in the world, the human body. Created by anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens, inventor of Plastination and Dr. Angelina Whalley curator of the trailblazing “Body World” exhibitions that have been seen around the world, this fascinating exhibit is now available for viewing at the Discovery Museum inside Moody Gardens on Galveston Island.

Now through Jan. 12, 2025, “Body World RX: Prescriptions for Healthy Living” features real human specimens preserved through Plastination, a technique that removes the fluids from the body and replaces them with plastics that harden.

The specimens on display show impressive comparisons and contrasts between healthy bodies and organs and those stricken with disease. Particular emphasis is put on some of the most common ailments such as back pain, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases like arteriosclerosis and heart infarctions, dementia and more. It will inspire visitors to embrace preventive healthcare through an informative and entertaining presentation of the latest research on top health issues.

“Body Worlds,” the Original Exhibition, was the first exhibition of its kind to inform the visitor about anatomy, physiology and health by viewing real human bodies preserved through plastination in 1977 when von Hagens invented the process while he was working as an anatomist at the University of Heidelberg. Since the beginning of the exhibition series in Japan in 1995, more than 55 million visitors in 41 countries in nearly 160 cities in the Americas, Europe, South Africa, Asia, and Australasia have seen the world’s most successful traveling exhibition.

Tickets to “Body World RX: Prescriptions for Healthy Living” start at $17 and can be purchased online at moodygardens.org.

Moody Gardens is also hosting a new film – “Superhuman Body 3D: World of Medical Marvels” – inside their 3D Theater.
