The University of Houston (11-2) and second place finishers in the American Athletic Conference will play Auburn (6-6) in the Birmingham Alabama Bowl on Dec. 28.

The Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, will welcome the seventh-place finishers of the Big 12, Texas Tech (6-6), against Mississippi State (7-5) on Dec. 28.

SMU (8-4) finished sixth in the American Athletic and got a date with Virginia (6-6) on Dec. 29 in the Fenway Bowl in Boston, Massachusetts, which will be played in the famed baseball stadium at Fenway Park.

The Texas A&M Fightin’ Aggies (8-4), who were the only team to beat No. 1 Alabama this season, face Wake Forest (10-3) in the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, on New Year’s Eve.

Baylor (11-2), champions of the Big 12, received a trip to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, against Ole Miss (10-2) on Jan. 1.

Lamar Cardinals

The women’s basketball team ended a three-game skid Dec. 4 against Loyola University of New Orleans. A big reason for the win was the play of sophomore Sabria Dean, who was named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Player of the Week on Dec. 5.
In 36 total minutes of game time, Dean netted 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and also posted a season high seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Dean currently leads LU in scoring (15.5 points per game), field goals made (35), three-point percentage (50%) and three-pointers made (16).

The Cards (3-5) have now won two in a row after beating McNeese 88-76 on Dec. 7 inside the Montagne Center. A pair of 20-point scorers led the way for the Cardinals in freshman Akasha Davis, 25 points, and Dean, who added 20 points including 15 in the second half.

the quarter. LU barely outshot McNeese 40%-38.9% in the quarter and led 42-36 at the break.

LU will play host to Texas State (5-2) on Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. and Prairie View A&M (2-6) on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m.
The men’s team improved to 2-7 on the season with a 67-64 home win over Our Lady of the Lakes University on Dec. 5.

Senior C.J. Roberts continued his hot start scoring a game-high 23 points. Big Red shot 24-of-63 from the field, but converted just 2-of-15 from long range. With their struggles from beyond the arc, LU turned their focus to the paint where they scored 38 points and outrebounded the Saints, 50-35, including 19 offensive rebounds (which led to 20 second chance points).
Lamar (2-7) will play a struggling UT Arlington (2-5) team in Arlington on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m., then make a trip west to San Marcos against Texas State (6-2) on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m.

The softball Cardinals recently added a new pitcher to the squad for the upcoming 2022 season as Kelsey Pizarro made it official by signing a National Letter of Intent to play softball in Beaumont.
Originally from Miami, Florida, Pizarro played varsity softball for four years at Rio Hondo High School in South Texas. Throughout her high school career, Pizarro posted a 3.80 ERA and struck out 132 batters. She also was a force at the plate, batting .356 while leading Rio Hondo to three district championships.
As a freshman, Pizarro won both All-District Utility and Newcomer of the Year awards for her actions on the field. Twice was she named first team all-district as a pitcher and also received the honor as a shortstop following her sophomore season. Off the field, she was a member of the National Honor Society, and was ranked 16th in her class, and received an acknowledgment for college courses.
Pizarro is also related to former Lamar University football player Erik Pizarro.
