The Southland Conference football teams took center stage July 24 during the league’s annual media day.

Joining head coach LU Pete Rossomando to represent Lamar were sophomore receiver Sevonne Rhea and junior defensive back Ramond Stevens.

When the Cardinals open the season Thursday, Aug. 31, against an Idaho squad. which is already appearing in several publications’ preseason Top 25 polls, they will do so with a squad that boasts of 19 returning starters (including eight on offense) and 47 returning letterwinners.

In addition to media day, the conference also released its 2023 Preseason Poll. The Cardinals received 28 points and are picked to finish seventh in the conference ahead of Houston Christian. Southeastern Louisiana received nine first place votes to take the top spot edging out UIW (seven firstplace votes).

The Cardinals’ 2023 schedule consists of six home contests, but is back loaded with home games. LU will be on the road for three of their first five games but close the year at home for three of its final four.
