The Moon and Stars Committee, volunteers and friends of the Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs, celebrate the return of the Beaumont Maypole Festival on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds of the Beaumont Botanical Gardens at Tyrrell Park, 6088 Babe Zaharias Drive in Beaumont.

Participate in a unique cultural and community event and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings while celebrating the upcoming summer.

This family-friendly event, sponsored by Giglio Distributing Co., is free to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and a picnic while enjoying entertainment from Still Cruisin’ and dance troupes, and browsing local vendors including food from Cajunxion.

Emcee Marty Craig will keep things running smoothly, and at 4:30 p.m., students from the Bonnie Cokinos School of Dance will wrap the maypole, topped with a sculpture by local artist David Cargill, as crops are blessed in hopes of a fruitful yield this season.

“This festival is also a memorial to a dearly missed friend, Paula ‘Torchy’ Salter,” organizer Sandra Hammerling said. “It’s her spirit we’re trying to capture.”

The maypole was constructed in 2015 in memory of local philanthropist Paula “Torchy” Salter to honor her loving, giving spirit. The Maypole Festival’s “blessing of the crops” is held annually, the Saturday before Mother’s Day in May.
