Troy Delano Cheek Jr, 25, of Beaumont, was indicted by a Jefferson County Grand Jury on March 6 for the first-degree felony murder of Aaron Robert at his recently estranged lover’s home.

Beaumont Police Department (BPD) Detective Aaron Lewallen responded to the Phelan Boulevard apartment on Feb. 24 to find Aaron Robert, 24, had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

According to the probable cause affidavit, evidence indicated Cheek fired a single round through his exgirlfriend’s bedroom window from a parking lot on the north side of the complex.

The ex-girlfriend told officers she had recently broken up with Cheek who had not been handling the breakup well. He was recently listed as a suspect in a burglary, in which he reportedly broke into her apartment and damaged her property.

The ex-girlfriend told officers she received a call from Cheek just before the shooting and told him to stop calling her. He replied, “I’m gonna show you.”

Officers went to Laurel Avenue and discovered Cheek sitting on the front porch and he began yelling for his family not to let officers search the house. Cheek was detained and after receiving consent to search the vehicle and residence, officers recovered a 9mm handgun hidden in a bathroom compartment, lying next to the red shirt Cheek was described to have been wearing before officers arrived.

Cheek later confessed to shooting into the woman’s bedroom window. Cheek stated he was walking by and heard noises that sounded like she was having sex, became angry and fired one round through the window.

Cheek was previously convicted and served two years for the felony charge of injury to a child in the second degree on Feb. 19, 2019. He was babysitting a one-year-old child on March 7, 2017, when she fell off the bed while he was playing video games. The fall resulted in her death.
