Port Arthur City Manager Brian McDougal announced March 16 the termination of an employee accused of theft and tampering with government documents.

Court Clerk Sharon Shelvin was reportedly fired March 12 following an investigation by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, with assistance from the Port Arthur Police Department, that uncovered evidence of theft of municipal court fines and tampering with official court documents, McDougal reports in a press release.

An alleged car thief was arrested after stealing a man's vehicle while the man was rendering aid to his son, who was having car trouble. The accused thief fled from police but soon discovered he could not outrun the long arm of the law.

The second-floor courtroom at the Jefferson County Courthouse is often the scene of intense crime and punishment dramas. Last Monday, Jan. 12, Judge John Stevens of the Criminal District Court decided the fate of Terry Rogers, accused in the theft of a cherished local landmark that had stood in front of the Port Arthur Public Library for over 30 years.

A man accused of shoplifting in Vidor discovered Dec. 20 that stealing candy from Dollar General is not as easy as stealing candy from a baby in the proverbial sense.

Police are still searching for the suspect or suspects responsible for the thefts of at least four car stereos on Christmas Eve at the Sunset Grove Apartments in Orange.

Due to a recent string of thefts or attempted thefts reported in Port Arthur, Port Arthur Police are warning Southeast Texans to be cautious when approached by strangers asking for a ride.

According to a PAPD press release, in these thefts people are approached in parking lots of stores or banks, where a suspect will ask them for a ride to one of the local businesses. The suspect usually speaks with a heavy accent and claims to be from Nigeria, the press release states.
