LU sophomore running back Damashja Harris was named named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Harris received the honor – the second of his career – for his efforts in helping the Cardinals defeat Northwestern State on Oct. 7 in Beaumont.

Harris returned only one kick against the Demons, but he made his one return count. Just moments after NSU tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter, Harris fielded the ensuing kickoff on his own 5-yard line, broke one tackle and then weaved his way through traffic to the far sideline and then simply outsprinted the coverage to the goal line.

The touchdown put Lamar on top and the Cardinals never trailed after that as Big Red recorded a 27-13 victory over Northwestern State.

Harris’ 95-yarder is the second-longest of his career and ranks among the school’s all-time Top 10. Last season he recorded a school-record 100-yard return against Houston Christian and closed out the 2022 campaign garnering all-conference honors as a return specialist.

The Cardinals’ win Saturday moved the team to 3-3 on the season and more importantly 2-0 in Southland Conference play.

Lamar will look to make it four in a row when they travel to Hammond, Louisiana, to face Southeastern Louisiana (0-6, 0-2) at 3 p.m. SLU has won the last five games against Lamar.

Needing clutch defense to step up once again, Lamar University’s soccer team handed McNeese their first Southland Conference loss of the season with a 2-1 victory in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Oct. 8. LU’s winning streak is now at 10 games, which marks the third time in program history that the Cardinals have reached that mark. LU sits at 11-2-1 overall and first in the league at 6-0.

Scoring second half goals were Maddie Janolo and Trinity Clark. Goalie Nicole Panis made six saves.

Now, LU returns home this Friday, Oct. 13, to face-off with Incarnate Word (5-6-1, 2-4) at 7 p.m. and Texas A&MCommerce (7-5-1, 5-0) on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
