The Beaumont Public Schools Foundation (BPSF) Inc. raised funds and fed hungry contributors at its 20th annual Fiesta Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Crazy Jose’s in Beaumont. For breakfast, attendees gave $20 minimum donations, which go toward educational grants for Beaumont Independent School District staff and students.

HEB is close to buying — and subsequently razing — the old Baptist Hospital at College and 11th Street in Beaumont, but some say the deal could remove access to healthy foods in low-income areas of Beaumont.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mitch Woods presented Deputy Larry Gilder with a Life Saving Award at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Academy Classroom in Beaumont on Oct. 30.

On Oct. 12, Gilder was patrolling the area of Highway 90 and Meeker Road, near Cowboy Church on the Rock west of Beaumont, when he saw an 18-wheeler pulling a trailer with a heavy load of oil equipment become stuck on the railroad tracks.

In an effort to combat homelessness and provide safe, affordable housing for clients in need, the Spindletop Center opened the doors of the Courtyard at Spindletop, a new independent-living apartment complex in Beaumont, on Thursday, Oct. 25. The group invited interested community members to join them for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening of the new complex that morning.

On Oct. 29, the United States Supreme Court rejected a last-ditch plea to re-hear evidence related to the conviction of Elroy Chester, who was sentenced to die for the 1998 murder of Port Arthur firefighter Willie Ryman III. Chester was alleged to have killed the firefighter when Ryman came to the rescue of his two nieces while Chester was raping the teen girls in their home.
