In its ongoing endeavor to uplift and support parents who’ve suffered the loss of a child, Surviving Parents of SETX is holding its first annual red carpet event Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Major Event Center.

It’s an organization whose members would rather avoid being a part of, but one that’s provided a support system those members agree is vital in navigating life after losing a child. What started as two mothers grieving the loss of their children to “senseless violence” blossomed into a 501(c)(3) with dozens of members and the support of some major criminal justice organizations in Jefferson County.

The group aims to offer support, an outlet for sharing experiences, sharing strengths, venting and ways to use those and other coping mechanisms to convert abject grief into hope. While the group is holding its first gala event Oct. 23, Surviving Parents of SETX meets twice a month at its Lucas Street location. The nonprofit meets on the first and third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“There is so much to the process, so much need involved; some don’t know how to go on, how to find normalcy, wonder if living is worthwhile. That is why Surviving Parents is a part of the coalition for crime victims,” according to group officials. “Surviving Parents of SETX offers positive grief coping mechanisms, that include peer-to-peer interactions, grief counseling, grief coaching, financial and medication assistance, grief programs and events, activities and outings, a food pantry, clothing and household item assistance, as well as referrals to needed charitable agencies.”
