Lamar Cardinals

Facing off with New Mexico State four days after their original date was delayed due to COVID-19, the women’s team found itself in another tight Western Athletic Conference contest, but down the stretch, the Aggies were able to get the big plays and sink crucial free throws to hand LU a second-straight conference loss, 57-53, on Jab. 10.

Senior Anyssia Gibbs was the team leading scorer with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Akasha Davis posted 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Despite out-shooting their opponents from the field, the Cards fell to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Cards will try to get into the conference win column Thursday, Jan. 13, at Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. followed by a trip up north to Chicago State on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m.

The women’s team will return home to host Stephen F. Austin on Monday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. inside the Montagne Center.
LU’s men’s basketball team has been in total disarray with COVID-19. The Cards last played on Dec. 30, 2021, in a loss at Sam Houston State and has forfeited games with New Mexico State and Grand Canyon University.

With a 2-12 overall record and 0-3 in league action, Lamar is scheduled to host Sam Houston State on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. and Chicago State on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 3 p.m. before a Monday, Jan. 17-tilt at Stephen F. Austin.

The softball program will look to have their first winning season since 2017 when they start the 2022 schedule Feb. 10-13 at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, against four teams in Memphis, Washington, Rutgers and Long Beach State.

The schedule includes 21 home games (12 conference) and three tournaments.
LU’s home debut begins Feb. 18-19 by hosting the Cardinal Classic and will play Ohio University, New Mexico and Creighton.

One week later, the Cardinals will go west to Houston for their first and final non-conference tournament Feb. 25-27 with Houston, Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Lamar will also have two series with Sam Houston State. The first of the two will be a non-conference series on March 4-5 and then finish the season May 6-8 at home with Sam Houston State at home for conference actions.

Other non-conference games include Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas, McNeese State, Southern University and Texas Southern.

The WAC Tournament will take place on May 11-14 in Huntsville, Texas.
“We are excited to get the season started,” said head coach Amy Hooks. “We get started in Mexico, which is an awesome experience for our student athletes. We will play a very competitive schedule that will allow us to be ready for conference play. We have mixed in some ranked opponents this season and ‘‘m ready to see our team compete this season.”
