Spindletop Center and it’s Consumer Advocacy Advisory Committee (CAAC) will be holding a “Release the Stigma” butterfly release at the Shangri-La Botanical Gardens,2111 W Park Ave., in Orange on Friday, April 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event is meant to help fight the stigma associated with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
The butterfly release is set for 11 a.m.
The “Release the Stigma” butterfly release previously was a regularly scheduled annual event for Spindletop Center, but this is to be the first one since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Individuals choosing Spindletop Center as their provider for IDD services are invited to attend and participate in the event.
“This year, we are releasing the stigma of individuals who live with a disability,” said Lauren Bridwell, the lead organizer for this year’s event. “Additionally, introducing pollinators, such as butterflies, help our environment in so many ways. We’re super excited to start this annual event up again!”
Spindletop Center currently serves individuals of all ages with IDD in Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Jasper, and Chambers counties. IDD can cause significant limitations in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills and typically emerges before the age of 18. Spindletop Center provides an array of services, such as help in accessing medical, social, educational, and other life skills trainings that can aid individuals with IDD by improving their quality of life.
