After a 34-year-old man fled from narcotics detectives with an array of drugs, as well as an unwilling absconder in tow, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) officers arrested a pair of Nederland residents June 16.

On Thursday, June 16, at about 3:40 p.m., detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division attempted to stop a black GMC truck driven by Eric Edward Sunderland, 34, and occupied by Kalynn Hallmark, 28.

“During the pursuit, detectives observed Hallmark screaming, crying and pleading to get out of the vehicle, as well as Sunderland making his hand in the shape of a pistol and motioning as if he were shooting at the detectives,” JCSO reported of their encounter with Sunderland. “During the course of the investigation it was determined that Hallmark was being held against her will.”

Detectives observed objects being thrown from the vehicle, and recovered the contraband with assistance from the JCSO Patrol and Warrant divisions. JCSO later determined the objects that were thrown out of the suspect vehicle were travel-sized pouches containing suspected methamphetamine, suspected marijuana, pharmaceutical pills and other drug paraphernalia.

This pursuit started on Cardinal Drive and ended on Highway 73, where detectives arrested both Hallmark and Sunderland. Officers charged Hallmark for possession of a controlled substance and a felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance, charging Sunderland for evading in a motor vehicle, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a controlled substance.

Detectives positively identified Hallmark as the passenger prior to the attempted stop, noting her as “a known felon with an outstanding felony warrant.” According to detectives, Sunderland, who appears to have teeth tattooed on his forehead, “refused to stop, fleeing from detectives.”

As of press time, Hallmark’s name did not appear on the Jefferson County inmate roster, whereas Sunderland’s was listed alongside a $150,000 bond.
