Lamar University is celebrating Earth Day with a unique event – solar smoothies for students. Students participating will learn how to integrate sustainability into a tasty and nutritious snack. This event will take place Monday, April 22, from 12:30-2 p.m. outside Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall (796 E Virginia St.) in an area receiving lots of good sunshine.

Utilizing solar technology and direct sunlight, the solar panels are designed to power everything from electronics to small appliances, like a blender. The power generated from the solar panels is used to operate the blender that can make smoothies in an exciting, innovative way. This sustainable approach to energy use is a way to educate and inspire students to make a positive impact on campus and beyond. Through this fun event in honor of Earth Day, Lamar University aims to educate students about the importance of solar energy, energy efficiency, and resource stewardship.

Lamar University has partnered with Schneider Electric to implement campus-wide upgrades and improve energy efficiency. Some of the notable improvements include energy efficient lighting retrofits throughout the campus, as well as an energy management system and HVAC replacements to enhance indoor comfort and air quality. This long-term partnership is designed to provide a better learning environment for students.
