LC-M Bass Team

Four members of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bass Fishing Team have qualified and will compete in the The BassMaster High School National Championship on Aug. 11-13 on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina.

Will Henson, Justin James, Tanner Stewart and Jacob Longlois, along with captains Joel James and Jeff Longlois, will make up two of only 15 teams from the state of Texas as 315 boats will compete for the top prize. The full field will fish the first two days and only the Top 10 will advance to the championship Aug. 13.

Baseball

Former Bridge City standout Chase Shugart pitched the final two innings to help the first no-hitter in the history of the Worcester Red Sox, as they beat the Durham Bulls 12-0, on Aug. 4.

Michael Wacha, who played for Texas A&M, began the night with 4.2 hitless frames, A.J. Politi tossed the next 2.1 innings and Shugart had the eighth and ninth to cap off the no-no. The final out came on a diving grab in left by Devlin Granberg, who entered in the fourth.

“You see it in the bullpen sitting there watching for six or seven innings, and then you’re like ‘okay, there’s a zero there, so don’t mess it up,’” Shugart said.

The game marked the first no-hitter by Boston’s Triple-A team since Bronson Arroyo’s perfect game for the Pawtucket Red Sox on August 10, 2003, nearly 19 years to the day.

Worcester’s no-hitter is the 23rd in Minor League Baseball this season and the second in Triple-A (Indianapolis, 4/13/22).

Lamar Cardinals

The 2021 stable of Lamar receivers hauled in 91 passes for 1,226 yards with seven touchdowns. As a group, the receivers averaged nearly 13.5 yards per catch.

Unfortunately, attrition took a heavy toll on the position following the season as LU lost its top for targets in terms of receptions and receiving yards, but the coaching staff has been preparing for that moment through recruiting, and a blessing in disguise.

Senior Jalen Dummett originally came to LU as a quarterback and immediately earned the starting job. Now, due to depth at the quarterback position, Dummett has the ability to help the Cardinals at receiver. In addition to his size and speed, Dummett can now utilize his knowledge of defenses during his time as quarterback and apply them to receiver, which should give him a slight advantage on the field compared to other receivers.

Dummett will serve as the elder statesman among a receiver group that consists of 22 underclassmen (14 sophomores and eight freshmen). Preparing ahead of time for this season, the LU coaching staff brought in four receivers on National Signing Day, and added a total of eight over the course of two previous recruiting classes. The crop of incoming receivers over the course of the previous two recruiting cycles consists of standouts who average 6-2, 182.

The Cardinal newcomers add an element of speed to the position that hasn’t been there in past seasons and includes numerous district MVPs, all-state selections, school record holders and multiple 2,000-yard receivers.
Some of the names include Cameron George, Sevonne Rhea, Tyrique Carter, Dozie Ifeadi, Andre Davis, Jacoby Davis, Keshaun Lazard, Javonta Thomas, Terrence Isaac, Jace Burns, Kyndon Fuselier and Jayden Boyd.

The Nathan Kogut era started Aug. 4 as the women’s soccer team reported to campus for the start of preseason workouts. With 16 returners from the 2021 squad that went 10-8-2 along with 13 newcomers, the Cardinals will open their season Sunday, Aug. 21, when they host the University of Houston at 7:30 p.m.
Returners include goalkeepers Vivienne Carr and Nicole Panis, defenders Meg Sheppard, Abby Gemza, Grace Richard and Sarah Zimmer, midfielders Isabel Bassa, Kaisa Juvonen, Eva Karen, Laura Linares, Sabrina Lopez, Paloma Martinez and Hollie Massey, and forwards Arely Alaniz, Christin Kitaru and Isela Ramirez.
