Open Mic Poetry

Judgment-free Open Mic Poetry presentation – and spectating – will commence at the Johns Library located on Fannett Rd. on the fourth Saturday of each month, kicking off 2023 on Jan. 28, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Adults and teens age 14 and up are invited to share poetry with other artists.

Fundraiser scheduled Jan. 28 in Saratoga

The first-ever Saratoga Gumbo Cook-Off and Washer Tournament is Saturday, Jan. 28, at the First Assembly of God Church, hosted by the U45 Men’s Ministry. All proceeds go to help with medical bill for a member of the community.

Kountze HS grad on national judging team

Former Kountze High School graduate Hayden Holland and the Texas Tech University wood judging team took first at the National Western Stock Show Wool Judging Competition. Holland is a 2022 graduate and former Kountze FFA member. The 117th National Western Stock Show was Jan. 7-22 in Denver.

Walk Across Texas! program kicks off Feb. 1.

The Walk Across Texas! program, an online physical activity promotion program offered by AgriLife Extension, will kickoff Wednesday, Feb. 1. The program is designed to help Texans be more active. Adult and youth teams are encouraged to work together to virtually travel 832 miles across Texas.

Sour Lake Farmers Market opening

The grand opening of the Sour Lake Farmers Market is Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Lions Club Park on South Ann Street. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be homegrown produce and products available, along with homemade crafts and goods, and educational booths.

Cash awarded for concerto winners

The first-place winner of the Symphony of Southeast Texas 2023 Concerto Competition is pianist Matthew Liu from Beaumont. Liu won the prize of $750 and the honor of playing his competition piece, Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G minor, at the Youth Education Concert.
