Dec. 4, the City of Port Arthur Health Department reported two COVID-19 related deaths in residents of Port Arthur. The individuals include a white male between the age of 75-80 and a black female between the age of 70-75. It has been determined that both of the individuals had underlying health conditions. The Health Department has reported 45 COVID-19 related deaths for Port Arthur since the beginning of this pandemic.

“We emphasize again that COVID-19 is a very serious disease,” Director of Health Services Judith A. Smith, BSN, RN, ThD, released in a public statement. “While 80% of individuals who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and fully recover, they may spread the disease to people who are at high risk. The elderly and people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems are at a much higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19. We strongly advise at-risk individuals to minimize contact with others who are ill, practice social distancing and wear a mask when in public.”

The Health Department has partnered with Gulf Coast Health Center to provide free testing for residents of Port Arthur. Residents should call the COVID number at (409) 983-8880 for a referral for testing. It is not necessary to have symptoms in order to get tested.
