County braces for disaster

Citing concerns of “eminent threat of suffering widespread or severe damage, injury or loss of life or property,” Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick has declared a state of emergency for the area beginning Aug. 23. The disaster declaration is in anticipation of impact from hurricanes/ tropical storms Marco and Laura, both currently on trajectory to impact Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana the beginning of next week. 

“Extraordinary measures must be taken and continued to alleviate the suffering of people impacted and to protect and rehabilitate property,” the disaster declaration read.

Also on Aug. 23, the city of Port Arthur announced sand bags would be available at the Bob Bowers Civic Center, 3401 Cultural Center Drive, until 5 p.m.
