Ridgewood Retirement Community

In the dark and cluttered lobby of The Ridgewood Retirement Community, pictures of former residents and their families lay strewn across a dirty, trash-ridden floor.

The Ridgewood Retirement Community caught ablaze Saturday evening about 5:30 p.m.

Flames did not spread through the entire facility, but could be seen shooting from the 9th Street side of the complex about 6:30 p.m.

BFD spokesman Brad Pennison said there were vagrants in the area when the fire started and several eyewitnesses said homeless people had settled in the largely abandoned facility.

Some two months after the owner closed the Ridgewood Retirement Community rather than address a number of health department and city building code violations, residents have relocated and the owner has put the decaying facility up for sale.

When William Dennis Foster Jr. came to the Ridgewood Retirement Community in 2007, his family said the facility was a welcoming and attractive alternative to many assisted living centers around Beaumont.
