The city of Port Arthur is scrambling to change hiring practices after terminating an employee, also an ex-felon convicted of forgery, amid allegations of theft and tampering with government documents.

Port Arthur City Manager Brian McDougal announced March 16 the termination of an employee accused of theft and tampering with government documents.

Court Clerk Sharon Shelvin was reportedly fired March 12 following an investigation by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, with assistance from the Port Arthur Police Department, that uncovered evidence of theft of municipal court fines and tampering with official court documents, McDougal reports in a press release.

A Port Arthur man who claimed self-defense in a 2013 shooting has been found guilty of aggravated assault. The trial of Erich Seals, 47, accused of shooting Donald Williams, began Wednesday, March 4, at the Jefferson County Courthouse and lasted through Friday, March 7.

According to police, Seals shot Williams, husband to the mother of his child, at the Port Arthur Park Apartments two years ago.

A 53-year-old Port Arthur man has been sentenced to federal prison for child pornography violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John Malcolm Bales Feb. 17.

John “Johnny” Anthony Sassine pleaded guilty on Nov. 4, 2014 to attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor and was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison Feb. 17 by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

A 57-year-old Rialto, California woman living in Port Arthur has been sentenced to federal prison for drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John Malcolm Bales on Feb. 5.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Angie Dang pleaded guilty on Oct. 2, 2014 to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield.
