The original RIF list, containing more than 100 teaching positions, including Risby’s, failed to garner enough support to pass at a Monday, June 30, Board of Trustees meeting.

Monday, July 21, The Examiner gave me the opportunity to meet with Texas Education Agency Commissioner of Education Michael Williams alongside various local media outlets. After receiving our clearance to visit with him, we were ushered to the fifth floor of the Edison Plaza building. Moments later, Commissioner Williams entered the room, joined us at the table where we were seated, and greeted us.

Texas Education Agency deputy commissioner Michael Berry ruled that TEA Commissioner Michael Williams was within his right to appoint an interim superintendent and Board of Mangers to take over operations formerly entrusted to the Beaumont Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday, July 14.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has dismissed a case against former BISD warehouse supervisor Daryl Johnson, who was fired in May 2012 under suspicion of theft and subsequently indicted on two counts of felony theft. The indictment alleged Johnson stole approximately $280,000.

Protests by members of the Fine Arts Matters student organization continued Monday, June 30, despite an attempt by Jefferson County 172nd Civil District Court Judge Donald Floyd to unseat the current Beaumont Independent School District Board of Trustees that was looking to address a budget shortfall with, among other things, cuts to fine arts programs.

No action was taken by Floyd, however, who was unable to secure replacements for the board.

June 26 was the third and final day of the Special Education hearing concerning compensation for the alleged abuse and mistreatment of 6-year-old Pietzsch-MacArthur Elementary special needs student Triniti Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux suffers from Angelman Syndrome, a disorder that makes the young child unable to speak and causes seizures.
