Unless you were a coach on the Lamar staff or one of the players, you probably thought the Cardinals had a small chance of beating Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday in the college football season opener. I mean, UL plays in the bigger Football Bowl Subdivision won a bowl game last season. No way, right? What we didn’t expect to see were a plethora of mistakes which led to many easy points and short drives for UL. The 13 points yielded by Lamar in the first quarter came on drives no longer than six plays each.

The Houston Cougars nearly had an undefeated season, but 13-1 and beating Penn State 30-14 in the TicketCity Bowl was a great way to finish last year. Days after Houston’s only loss, coach Kevin Sumlin departed for College Station and Tony Levine was promoted to interim coach, then led the Coogs to their bowl win. The school took the interim tag off and named Levine the new head coach.

It seems odd that just four seasons ago, the Rice Owls finished the season 10-3 and defeated Western Michigan 38-14 in the Texas Bowl in 2008. It was one of their best seasons to date and only their fifth bowl win in school history. But now with head coach David Bailiff entering his sixth season at Rice, he has just one winning season while there. Most don’t expect the Owls to win seven or eight games each year, but Rice fans expect more than what has been taking place down on Main Street.

Eight Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD students were invited to compete in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics weightlifting competition in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center on July 27. American and world records were broken by these students, who brought home 16 gold medals and one silver.

New coach, new conference and even new uniforms — the Texas A&M Aggies are finally out of the shadow of the University of Texas. The team lost four of its last five regular season games, and parted with coach Mike Sherman, hiring Kevin Sumlin from the University of Houston. The Aggies did manage to end the season on a high note as they defeated Northwestern 33-22 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

After a dismal 5-7 season in 2010, the Texas Longhorns rebounded with an 8-5 record last year and earned a 21-10 victory over California in the Holiday Bowl. Despite that bowl win, that 8-5 record, along with losses to Oklahoma State, Missouri and Kansas State and blowout losses to Baylor and Oklahoma, is subpar by the standards in Austin.

It’s August and the temperature is scorching hot, which means one thing — football season is less than a month away. The infamous two-a-day practices begin bright and early on Monday, Aug. 6, for schools that did not participate in spring practices, which applies to just Class 5A and 4A Schools.

Lamar football, which returns 14 total starters, was picked seventh in the 2012 Southland Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll results announced July 24 during the SLC Football Media Day at L’Auberge du Lac in Lake Charles.

The Cardinals are coming off a sixth-place finish after a 4-7 overall record and 2-5 Southland mark. Lamar was the only school not represented on the Southland Conference’s preseason all-conference team.

This time two years ago, fans were super excited that football, absent since 1989, was returning at Lamar University. It had been too long since fans, alum and students could sit in the stadium and watch college football.

Money flowed in to make it happen, beautifully refurbishing the stadium, which went on to be named Provost Umphrey Stadium. Everyone embraced the return of Lamar football.
