Kountze ISD may be looking at more legal wrangling over Bible verses on banners at school-sponsored sports games after the district appealed a ruling by a Hardin County judge allowing the banners.

The controversy started in September 2012 when a group of Kountze High School cheerleaders created run-through banners featuring Bible verses for Friday night football games, prompting the nonprofit Freedom From Religion Foundation to threaten legal action.

Entergy Texas Inc. held its first annual Operation: Storm Ready, a hurricane preparedness event, at the Ford Park Exhibit Hall in Beaumont on Wednesday, May 29. The pre-season event was an effort to educate the public regarding emergency readiness and to show how Entergy is prepared for the worst.

In the latest twist to the ongoing Beaumont Independent School District redistricting saga, the governing Board of Trustees has voted to submit a new map for approved use in the next school board election that pads the population numbers of two districts with thousands of inmates from correctional facilities in the area although the felons housed therein cannot vote.

On May 21, relayers, service volunteers, cancer survivors and loved-ones of cancer victims alike gathered at the ACS office in Beaumont to commemorate ACS’s 100th birthday and to commemorate struggles lost and battles won.

If reaching its 100th birthday wasn’t enough reason to celebrate, American Cancer Society (ACS) has even more cause to commemorate the occasion. The Beaumont Relay for Life event, held May 3 at Ozen High School raised more than $150,000 total, with Relay for Life team Survivor Jefferson County alone raising $32,096 for ACS.
