Jim Sanderson, professor and chair of Lamar University’s Department of English and Modern Languages, has recently published a new collection of short stories, “Trashy Behavior,” through the Lamar University Press.

Sanderson decided to produce the collection after winning the Texas Institute of Letters’ Kay Cattarulla Award for Short Fiction in 2012 for the short story, “Bankers.”

Beaumont firefighters responded to three separate structure fires overnight from Jan. 24 to Jan. 25, 2014.

A Beaumont man is dead following a single-car accident Friday night, Jan. 24, 2014, at approximately 8 p.m. in the 4500 block of U.S 69 South on the Fannett Road overpass. According to traffic investigators, multiple factors contributed to the cause and severity of the crash.

As of 2:40 p.m. on Jan. 24, Neches River bridge traffic was at a standstill.

UPDATE (7:31 p.m. Jan. 24, 2014): The Beaumont Police Department issued the following update on Beaumont Traffic operations. All highways in Beaumont had reopened, including Interstate 10, the Eastex Freeway, Cardinal Drive, and MLK Parkway. The Purple Heart Memorial Bridge over the Neches River was open, as well.

Police in Orange are looking for suspects in the shooting death of 35-year-old Emanuel Thornton of Orange, who was shot multiple times while in the front yard of a residence.

According to a news release from the Orange Police Department, on Thursday, Jan. 23, at about midnight, police dispatch received a call regarding shots fired in the 1500 block of Carter Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers saw Thornton lying in the yard with multiple gunshot wounds. Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Rodney Price pronounced Thornton dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.

 The City of Beaumont Emergency Management Division would like to share some tips to help prepare for freezing weather.

*   Monitor local weather forecasts and be mindful of rapidly changing weather conditions. Make a family emergency plan and put together emergency kits. Have a battery-powered radio with spare batteries in case your electricity goes off. Car radios and chargers can be a useful way to stay informed and power up electronic devices.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has been alerted to a new scam that is active in our area. In this scam, a resident received a call from an individual that was claiming to be employed by the Jefferson County Fraud Department. The caller ID showed the name of Jefferson County Courthouse. This can be done by what is termed spoofing by utilizing an electronic device or website with Voice Over IP (VOIP). The caller requested personal information from the resident as part of an investigation.
