The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas hosted the 2015 Law Day Art Contest Ceremony for the finalists. Scholarships of $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, $500 for third place and $250 for fourth place were awarded. The contest was open to high school students within the boundaries of the Beaumont Division of the Eastern District of Texas.The counties served by the Beaumont division are Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton and Orange.

Detectives with the Beaumont Police Department are working to determine the identity of two men responsible for killing a clerk during a robbery attempt at a west end convenience store, BPD reports.

At about 12:17 a.m. on April 29, patrol officers responded to a holdup alarm at the Pick N Shop located in the 800 block of S. Major, according to a news release from BPD. When officers arrived, they discovered the 52-year-old clerk dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Beaumont firefighters doused a blaze at a local apartment complex on April 27 that reportedly started in the kitchen of a residence.

According to a news release from Beaumont Fire-Rescue, units responded to 6040 Alpine Circle to a report of smoke coming from an apartment at the complex there. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment. Firefighters forced entry into the apartment and found the kitchen area involved by fire. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire, reports Beaumont Fire-Rescue.

Beaumont Firefighters responded to 6040 Alpine Circle to a report of smoke coming from an apartment on April 27. Upon arrival they found heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment. The unit forced entry and found the kitchen area involved by fire and were able to quickly extinguish the flames. An investigation determined the fire was caused by an oven that had been set to self-cleaning mode. Three other units received smoke and water damage. Occupants of those units are being assisted by Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

An 82-year-old man is dead, and Port Arthur Police believe a heart attack may have resulted in the one-vehicle accident leading up to the victim's demise over the weekend, PAPD reports.

A patrol officer in Orange called for backup Sunday evening after his attempt to cite a local resident for loud music got complicated, resulting in two arrests.

According to a report from OPD Officer Michael Roush, as he was patrolling April 26 at about 7:05 p.m. in the area of 2nd Street and Turret Avenue, he saw a Ford Expedition with the windows down and heard loud music blaring from the vehicle.

UPDATE: After three days of testimony, a Hardin County jury found 41-year-old Crystal Boyett guilty of manslaughter for the death of 20-year-old Connely Burns related to the Feb. 3, 2014 car crash that killed Burns, her unborn son Tyson, and her 15-year-old sister, Courtney Ray Sterling. Boyett was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, April 23.
