Zoey Randall, the little “Heart Warrior” featured in The Examiner in May, is still undergoing treatment and testing for her rare heart condition and other medical issues, and her family is still raising funds to assist with high medical expenses. Sept. 8, Bayou Din Golf Club is hosting an invitational golf scramble to raise funds to help pay those expenses.

When walking along what will be the new hike and bike trail in Kountze, one can’t help but be mesmerized by colorful flowers and aromatic pines, along with the smell of sweet honeysuckle. The new hike and bike trail will be the perfect outdoor place for the residents of Kountze as well as cyclists from across the area. Eager locals will be excited to know that the completion of the new trail, which runs parallel with North Highway 69, is nearing completion.

Four members of the Beaumont Jaguars Track Club competed at the 2014 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa, from July 26 – Aug. 2, once again showing Beaumont athletes are true competitors by bringing home two medals and placing high in multiple categories.

Don Rollins has been named director of fine arts for Vidor Independent School District to succeed longtime music director Ronnie Touchstone, whose last official day is Aug. 31. Rollins graduated from Lamar University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Music and is a former saxophone student of Lamar University President Emeritus Dr. Jimmy Simmons.

The fight against public corruption in Jefferson County continued Wednesday, Aug. 6, as a federal grand jury indicted three more former Beaumont Independent School District employees who are charged with embezzling money from a program receiving federal funds. Two of those indicted are alleged to have never actually worked for the district.

Community Bank of Texas presented the 100 Club of Southeast Texas with its first Survivors Benefit sponsorship Tuesday, Aug. 5, at a check presentation ceremony at the Community Bank of Texas Delaware location in Beaumont.

The $50,000 contribution will fund one full life benefit to the spouse and dependent children of a law enforcement officer or firefighter killed in the line of duty, said Zack Shelton, 100 Club of Southeast Texas president.

Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a reported structure fire at 1792 Hazel shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 6.

When firefighters arrived, they found the front of the house on fire. Firefighters were able to control the fire within minutes and the fire damage was moderate. The house was vacant with no utilities connected. The cause of the fire appears to be deliberate, Beaumont Fire and Rescue said in a press release.
