The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur took visitors on a journey back in time on July 2. Museum staff displayed items from a time capsule buried 20 years ago in July 1994 and other rare items the museum has collected over the last 50 years.

A 33-year-old Port Neches, Texas man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for child pornography violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today.

The Jefferson County Go Texan Committee will host a golf tournament Sept. 13 at the Idylwild Golf Club at in Sour Lake.  The shotgun start at 8 a.m. will be a four-man scramble with prizes for closest to the hole and hole-in-one.  The Jefferson County Go Texan organization devotes its efforts annually to helping area youths. Through their association and participation with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, area youths are granted scholarships each year.

A former Port Arthur Memorial High School coach indicted in July 2012 on charges on sexual misconduct with a student pleaded guilty July 7 and was sentenced July 8 in Jefferson County, Assistant Criminal District Attorney Ramon Rodriguez confirmed.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has dismissed a case against former BISD warehouse supervisor Daryl Johnson, who was fired in May 2012 under suspicion of theft and subsequently indicted on two counts of felony theft. The indictment alleged Johnson stole approximately $280,000.

Police say they think they know who did it. They can’t identify the suspect legally, but they think they know. Orange County District Attorney John Kimbrough says, in time, science will prevail and the culprit will be caught, but for now there is nothing he can do without potentially endangering the viability of the case.

Hundreds of children explored the Jefferson County Courthouse on Wednesday, July 9, as a part of “Know Your County Courthouse,” an event organized by local nonprofit Save Our Children (S.O.C) to give the area’s youth a chance to encounter the sights and sounds of the court in a controlled environment.
