The Jefferson County Young Lawyer’s Association hosted the 36th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Jefferson County Courthouse. After two rounds, the top two teams competed in a final trial to see who would be going to state.

A 53-year-old Port Arthur man has been sentenced to federal prison for child pornography violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John Malcolm Bales Feb. 17.

John “Johnny” Anthony Sassine pleaded guilty on Nov. 4, 2014 to attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor and was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison Feb. 17 by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

Port Arthur Police responded to a report of a subject being struck by a vehicle in the 8100 block  of S HWY 69 on Saturday, Feb. 14. At approximately 1:33 a.m. a small passenger car was traveling south on Hwy 69 when a white male attempted to cross the highway traveling west to east, according to reports. He was struck by the southbound vehicle and died of his injuries. The subjects in the passenger car were not injured.
