Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman called the actions of terrorists in France responsible for the deaths of 17 people from Jan. 7 through Jan. 9 "sickening," mourned the loss of fellow law enforcers across the nation and warned people to obey officers' commands in order to avoid a bad situation.

Lynell Whittington, 45, of Beaumont is dead and his 35-year-old brother suffered a stab wound after they fought over which television program to watch in the early morning of Jan. 11. According to a press release, patrol officers responded to a house in the 2000 block of Ives after an elderly man called 911 to report his sons fighting.  He also told dispatchers that his older son was unconscious.

A homeless Vidor man was arrested after an altercation at an apartment complex on Orange Street in Vidor on Jan. 2 in which the man allegedly attacked multiple victims while in possession of two hatchets and a knife, reports the Vidor Police Department.

Port Arthur Police officers were called to Cedar Ridge Apartment complex on 9th Ave. in reference to an Aggravated Robbery on Jan. 10.  According to a press release, at approximately 5:16 p.m., officers located the victim, who advised them that a subject approached her from behind and held a knife to her back while demanding money.

Police in Orange are searching for suspects in the armed robbery of a hotel that caused injury to an employee of the business on Jan. 7.

According to a news release from OPD, officers were dispatched to the Executive Inn in the 4300 block of North 27th Street in Orange at 10:19 p.m. in reference to an aggravated robbery.

Police in Beaumont are searching for suspects in an aggravated robbery of a local chain store, reports the Beaumont Police Department.

A local business owner trying to warm up during recent cold weather accidentally ignited a fire at his plant nursery when his heater malfunctioned on Jan. 7, Beaumont Fire/Rescue reports.

According to a news release, just before 7:30 p.m., the owner of Sunshine Plant House in the 3400 block of Concord Road in Beaumont reported a fire at the business. Firefighters responded and found part of a greenhouse in flames. They were quickly able to control and extinguish the blaze, which reportedly caused moderate damage to the structure.

Officers and EMS personnel responded to more than 50 overdoses they believe are related to use of a “particularly vile” batch of synthetic marijuana being sold in Beaumont that they warn could result in death for users.
