Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning Southeast Texans about a new “spoofing” scam active in the area, and said residents should be suspicious of any phone calls they might receive with “Jefferson County Courthouse” showing up as the name on the caller ID.

Caller ID spoofing allows a caller to masquerade as someone else by falsifying the number that appears on the recipient’s caller ID display; originally used by collection agencies, it was outlawed in 2010.

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 11, Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a reported structure fire at 3191 Tracy Ave., near Pope St. According to a press release, when firefighters arrived, they found flames visible from a rear window of the home. Firefighters were able to make a quick offensive attack and contain the fire to one bedroom but there was smoke damage to the rest of the house. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Two people were injured in an accident in Orange County after a driver veered into oncoming traffic in order to try to avoid an accident, reports the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect who robbed a local fast food restaurant at gunpoint in the early morning hours of Nov. 9, police in Orange report.

According to an incident report from the Orange Police Department, dispatch received a call at about 4 a.m. regarding a suspect dressed in a camouflage jacket and a ski mask who stole money from the 16th Street Jack-in-the-Box in Orange. The gun-wielding thief got away with an unspecified amount of money from the drive-thru register and the safe of the business.

Beaumont firefighters battled a blaze investigators are calling arson on Saturday, Nov. 8.

According to a news release from Beaumont Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to reports of a house in flames in the 2400 block of Durden Street in Beaumont. Firefighters were able to contain the fire within 20 minutes of arrival to the location. No one was injured as a result of the blaze.

A Newton man is dead after running into a cow with his motorcycle Saturday, Nov. 8.

At approximately 7:10 p.m. Saturday night, 45-year-old Paul David Szemborski, the driver of a Honda motorcycle, was traveling northbound on FM 1416 about four miles south of Bon Weir and struck a cow that was crossing the roadway, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

More than 4,500 people visited Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange from Oct. 8 through Nov. 1 to see decorated scarecrows at the sixth annual Scarecrow Festival at Shangri La Gardens. Visitors could vote for their favorite scarecrow, and winners were announced at the Autumn Fair held Saturday, Nov. 1.
