Tens of thousands of dollars worth of desks, chairs, tables, filing cabinets, audio-visual rolling carts, gym lockers and other items have been removed from several campuses throughout the district over the past month and somehow ended up at local scrap yards, an investigation by The Examiner has revealed.In early June, the newspaper was alerted that several churches and individuals were observed backing up pickup trucks, cars and moving vans to Dunbar Elementary School off of Irving Street and taking away furniture and other items that were purchased with taxpayer money.

Outgoing Port Arthur City Councilman Martin Flood is ending his tenure with a thud after he bonded out of the Jefferson County Jail this afternoon after he turned himself in to authorities. A warrant was issued for Flood's arrest today for criminal mischief, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and or a up to a $4000 fine.

According to Port Arthur Police, Flood damaged a car in the Central Mall parking lot to the tune of $1000 that led to the charges being filed.

After months of campaigning, the Port Arthur City Council is finally set with Harold Doucet and Derrick Freeman claiming the final two seats in District 4 and Position 7 respectively.

Doucet easily outpaced his opponent, Warren Field, 481-291, while the Position 7 race, easily the most contentious of any council race this campaign season, Freeman knocked off the venerable Willie "Bae" Lewis 1061-1006.

With a shade over 1500 early ballots cast in the 2011 Port Arthur City Council runoff election for the District 4 and Position 7 seats, there’s only one day left for the residents of those respective areas to decide who they want to represent them for the next three years.

Election Day is Saturday, June 25.

Giddyup! When a strain of equine herpes led to a temporary quarantine at horse farms in central Utah, the sponsors of the Davis County Mounted Posse Junior Queen contest in May had a dilemma, but instead of canceling the competition in which the cowgirls show their skills on horseback, they decided to conduct the show except with the girls “riding” stick “ponies” to get style points. Former queen Savanna Steed told KSL-TV the change would be good because it would better test riders’ knowledge of the routines instead of their relying on their horses to make the moves.

Beaumont police officers reported an arrested has been made in the death of 55-year-old Gregory Fleniken, a businessman who was found dead in his hotel room at the MCM Eleganté in September 2010.

On Wednesday, June 22, investigators with the Chippewa Sheriff's Office arrested Lance R. Mueller, 48, of Chippewa, Wisc. According to police, Mueller allegedly mishandled a firearm, which then went off and shot through the wall and into the adjacent room, where Fleniken was staying.

Mueller is expected to be extradited to Texas within the next few days.

The McDonald’s that sits at the corner of Savannah and Gulfway in Port Arthur has closed its doors for good and there is rampant speculation as to what caused the closure.

According to the McDonald’s regional office in Houston, the restaurant has been “closed permanently,” putting to rest any notion that the 26-year-old building that was originally opened in March of 1985 was being torn down in order to build a new McDonald’s that matches the fresher look and feel that the fast food titan has adopted in recent years.
