The city of Beaumont recorded its fourth homicide of the year this weekend and police are looking for leads and are asking for the public's help as they try to solve the murder of 40-year-old Fedro Gatlin.

Sgt. Pat Barton with the BPD's Criminal Investigation Department said police have people in custody in connection with city's other three homicides.

On Sunday, May 1, at 12:30 am., Beaumont police officers responded to a major crash at the intersection of College and Major.

Upon arrival, officers found a '97 Nissan had been struck from the rear by a '08 Dodge pickup. The driver of the Nissan, identified as 23-year-old Amber Hawthorne, daughter of a Jasper County constable and resident of China, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted. She was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth where she died of her injuries.

Five occupants in a house fire were all sent to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries Monday morning after the house they were in caught on fire, according to a press release from the Port Arthur Fire Department.

The one-story house is located in the 2600 block of 31st Street and according to the fire department, the house was engulfed when firefigters arrived, however the fire was under control within 15 minutes.

No word yet on what caused the fire.

A Port Arthur man with an outstanding warrant for a parole violation was apprehended by Port Arthur Police late Sunday evening after a burglary in the 1300 block of San Augustine Ave.

Inspectors with the city of Beaumont red tagged an electrical job being performed at West Brook High School and filed a report with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, documents obtain by The Examiner Newspaper have confirmed.

The 2011 Brooks Conference will attract about 130 Southeast Texas nonprofit, civic and government leaders – including more than 30 prominent speakers  – to Lamar University Thursday, May 5, for a day-long series of programs on topics ranging from the role of nonprofits in society to substance abuse. Shortly after 6 a.m. on April 29, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call concerning a person lying in the grass on the I-H 10 South Service road near Baird’s Bayou in Rose City, according to reports from the agency.

This election, the remaining three posts are up for grabs, as is the mayoral seat. The sun had yet to rise Friday, April 15, when Jana Williams got the call.

“My niece called me, to tell me what happened,” Williams remembers vividly. “Then the ambulance driver called me after that.”

The news from the other end of the phone was what parents’ nightmares are made of. Williams’ middle son, Ethan, was involved in a car accident – and the 21-year-old man who she nursed and loved his whole life was critically injured.
