58-year-old Johnny Williams of Groves was killed by the blast yesterday at the KMTex Plant in Port Arthur that also injured three other workers.

According to Rod Carroll, Public Information Officer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the explosion appears to have been caused by welding on a pipeline inside the plant where coal-tar solvent was also being used. The explosion sent two workers by medevac to UTMB-Galveston, one with head trauma and the other with a broken femur. A third injured worker was taken to St. Mary's Christus.

A 24-year-old Beaumont man has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a string of robberies in the Eastern District of Texas announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today.

Robert Lee White pleaded guilty to two counts of Hobbs Act robberies and two counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence today before U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Port Arthur Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance Service were all called out to an explosion at the KMTEX refinery on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur.

JCSO reported that upon arrival they found three injured victims and one deceased. The injuries included a concussion, fractures of lower extremities, burns and one victim with head trauma who was life-flighted to UTMB.

According to witnesses, a worker was welding on a pipeline containing coal tar solvent when the incident occurred and PAFD found there wasn't a hazmat incident.

Dr. Dewey Mosby, a renowned art historian and native of Orange, will give an illustrated lecture about artist Henry Ossawa Tanner on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lutcher Theater, 707 W. Main Avenue.  Mosby’s talk, Henry O. Tanner: African American Painter of Religious Images, will survey Tanner’s career with a concentration on the relationship between his race and his approach to religious paintings. Following the presentation will be a reception at the Stark Museum of Art, 712 Green Avenue. This event is free to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The plant is located at 2400 S. Gulfway.

The official said the concussion victim will be flown to Hermann Baptist Hospital in Houston while its expected the other injured persons will be sent to local hospitals.
