There has been some recent confusion about the status quo at the Jack Brooks Regional Airport.

“It’s an airport!”

“It’s a bus station!”

By February 2013, the likelihood is that Jack Brooks will be both an airport and a bus station.

The Orange County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a 2012-13 county budget at its meeting Monday, Sept. 24. The vote came after a budget workshop to make final adjustments earlier in the day. County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said the county will raise about $1.3 million more in total property taxes, or 5.47 percent, over the past year.

Two weeks ago, Beaumont Independent School District Taylor Career and Technology Center Principal Thomas Amons was accused of closing the district’s Adult Cosmetology program because he thought a prospective student might be gay. Cequana Clark, the program’s instructor since 2009, made those allegations even though, according to her, it ultimately cost her the job she loved.

Police say an elderly man caused an accident in Port Arthur on Monday night, Sept. 24, after he ran a stop sign, striking the vehicle of another man on his way home from work.

Early Friday morning, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested two motorists for possession of two kilograms of cocaine.

Friday, Sept. 21, at about 4:18 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at the 846 Mile Marker on Interstate 10. Both occupants of the vehicle appeared to be very nervous. The deputy asked for consent to search and was given consent by the individual that had rented the vehicle to search the vehicle. The deputy located two kilos of cocaine inside the passenger area of the vehicle.

Police attempt to pry unknown substance from suspect's mouth

Beaumont police arrested two suspects Thursday, Sept. 20, near Grand Street for possession of a controlled substance, among other charges. 

After pulling over a Ford Crown Victoria near downtown Beaumont on Grand Street, police placed suspects in handcuffs while they searched their vehicle. Upon closer inspection of the suspects, police say they noticed something in a male suspect's mouth. 

One female officer told the man, "Spit it out!" as she placed her hands on the man's throat.
