Jefferson County Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 7-13 as National 4-H Week in Jefferson County during their regular meeting Monday, Oct. 8, at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont. Members of the 4-H Club Jefferson County Youth Council visited Commissioners Court to celebrate the event. 4-H spokesperson Lairen Calhoun addressed the council on behalf of the group.

Carl R. Griffith & Associates announced its annual “Salute To Industry” has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 19, in the Pavilion at Ford Park. Gates will open at 6 p.m. The annual event is sponsored by area businesses to express support and appreciation for industries in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

The Better Business Bureau in Southeast Texas held its Laws of Life awards banquet Oct. 2 at the Holiday Inn & Suites Beaumont Plaza. The event honored eight Southeast Texas students who submitted award-winning essays in the BBB Consumer Education Foundation’s educational initiative Laws of Life, an ethics and character-based essay contest.

Jim Baxter of Region Five Education Service Center served as keynote speaker. The evening was highlighted with awarding the Laws of Life Student winners for the 2011-12 school year.

Garth House is holding its 27th annual “Pour Les Enfants” fundraiser Nov. 15 to raise child abuse awareness. The event’s theme is “The Edge of the Woodlands” and is inspired by the poem by Cicely Mary Barker “Song of the Bugle Fairy.”

Speculation and secrecy surround the dismissal of Rose City city secretary Veronica Jarrell Grant. According to Rose City Mayor David Bush, Grant was terminated in August of this year after approximately 18 years of service. Bush said Grant was terminated Aug. 17 and the matter was approved in the following regular City Council meeting Sept. 13.

Bush said he is not able to divulge information regarding the reason for her dismissal due to rules pertaining to “personnel” matters.

Anyone traveling between Orange County and Jefferson County along Interstate 10 has seen the cranes and big orange signs. Construction of the new Purple Heart Memorial Bridge, also known as the Neches River Bridge, is well underway and on schedule, according to Marc Shepherd, communication specialist at the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT).

The Aurora Sertoma Club honored Kent Walston with its Service to Mankind award for 2012 at a dinner at the Pompano Club. The award is the highest honor given to a non-Sertoma member for exemplary service to the community.

Last week, The Examiner revealed the problem of numerous illegal gambling dens spreading throughout the area and their negative impact on the community, particularly gambling addicts and the area’s most vulnerable residents. But the poor and the elderly are not the only ones affected by the area’s saturation of game rooms, which are filled with machines known collectively as eight-liners. Legitimate owners of legal businesses also suffer.

The invoice, in a white business envelope with a window on the front, looks legitimate. The first indication something is not quite right it is the postage mark indicating it is pre-sorted bulk mail – unusual for an invoice. The document itself, purporting to be from US-Telecom, looks like a standard invoice with your firm’s name and address, a reference number and a notation that you owe $425 for a Telecom Maintenance Agreement with the terms listed as “Net 30 Days.”
