Criminal District Attorney Cory Crenshaw announced in a Sept. 11 press release, that a Beaumont man has been found guilty of Capital Murder in the Aug. 5, 2008, shooting deaths of two brothers following a four day trial in the 252nd District Court of Jefferson County.

Jefferson County issued a beach advisory for McFaddin Beach on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Water samples collected at the point of the beach closest to the entrance of the National Wildlife Refuge found elevated levels of the Enterococcus bacteria. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers anything over 104 colonies to be unsafe.

In an effort to combat prescription drug abuse and addiction, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is taking measures to increase penalties associated with illegal use of certain prescription medications and to make it easier for people to dispose of their unused medications after discontinuing use.

In an Orange County Commissioners Court meeting Monday, Sept. 8, commissioners voted to approve a pay raise for Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt, a pay raise for which Merritt has been fighting for about three years.

Orange County uses the Matrix system, a pay system that charts county salaries and divides officials into terms based on the longevity of service. The system determines pay rates and pay raises.

The city of Beaumont approved a resolution adopting the Beaumont Riverfront Reinvestment Zone Project Plan, which will encourage development along the Neches riverfront at a Tuesday, Sept. 9, meeting of the Beaumont City Council.

The riverfront development, which has been a goal of the city for many years, was made possible with the removal of around 9,300 feet of railroad track between Riverfront Park and the Beaumont Civic Center by the Port of Beaumont.

Beaumont Fire Rescue will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 11:00 a.m. at number one fire station, 747 College Street in Beaumont. Beaumont Police and EMS personnel will also participate, as well as military personnel. "This is a time to pause and remember the events of 9/11/2001 and also recognize our local first responders and military," the news release from Beaumont Fire Rescue reads.

A 21-year-old Beaumont woman died as the result of a one-vehicle crash in Jefferson County, reports DPS Trooper Stephanie Davis. According to a news release, the one-vehicle crash occurred on FM 365 near Gilbert Road in Jefferson County at approximately 12:15 p.m. and killed Beaumont resident Heather Jones.

Police in Orange arrested a 27-year-old Orange resident after discovering the man was in possession of synthetic marijuana during a traffic stop on Sept. 8.

According to a police report from the Orange Police Department, Officer Stephen Ward conducted the traffic stop at approximately 10 p.m. Monday night when he observed a red, four-door Saturn traveling south in the 2000 block of 16th Street with an expired registration. The driver of the vehicle identified himself as Shawn Hand.

The Vidor Police Department is cracking down on offenders with outstanding warrants in the city, and in a move towards that effort, Police Chief Dave Shows is issuing a weekly top ten most wanted of those fugitives who have failed to pay their required fines for criminal offenses.

Police in Orange have arrested a suspect they say admitted to being high on PCP after responding to a call of a disturbance on Monday, Sept. 8, at about 11:18 p.m. When they found the man lying in the middle of the road, he reportedly started removing his clothing - all of it.
