Visiting the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 479 union hall on Cardinal Drive, one can sense a certain air of excitement about plans being made for the coming weeks. Activities are planned to honor the 100 years of the union’s rich and varied history and to celebrate the workers, both men and women, who have labored within this organization to help make Southeast Texas a leader in construction and maintenance of electrical concerns.

Five women were arrested in Orange as the result of a prostitution sting operation carried out by the Orange Police Department Wednesday, March 13. Bertha Geral, 50, Precious King, 34, Shanna Meaux, 29, Irisha Dupree, 33, and Melanie Rider, 45, were arrested and charged with prostitution.

There is a sad end to report on a story that first appeared in The Examiner in 2009. Marcus Leday, who graduated from West Brook High School in Beaumont in 2005, has taken his own life. He had enlisted in the Army after graduation, becoming part of the storied First Division – the Big Red One. Marcus was a mechanic, servicing combat tanks and trucks in the deserts of Iraq.

After almost two years, the family of murdered Beaumont police officer Bryan Hebert has found justice after John Wesley Nero pleaded no contest Thursday, March 14, to the 2011 capital murder that took Hebert’s life.

By taking the plea deal, Nero has avoided the death penalty and will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The Lamar University Foundation has announced the establishment of a new endowed scholarship. The Scott and Patricia Groben Scholarship in Chemistry has been established to assist students seeking a degree in chemistry.

Lamar University’s College of Education will host Ruby Payne, expert in educational leadership as ExxonMobil Scholar in Residence, March 21 and 22. Payne will conduct workshops March 21 with the fall 2012 ExxonMobil student researchers in the College of Education, with staff from Smith Middle School in attendance at one of the sessions. Sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Education and Human Development Building on the Lamar campus.

Police and fire fighters in Beaumont extinguished a late-night South Park blaze Tuesday night, March 12, but not before the duplex sustained heavy damage. 

According to a BPD press release, firefighters arrived at the home on 610 Palm Street about 10:30 p.m. to find the front of one side of the duplex completely engulfed. The occupants of the home, who were still inside when the fire started, were able to escape without injuries, but both families were relocated with the help of the Red Cross.

Three people were arrested in Orange County Tuesday, March 12 after a Crime Stoppers tip led sheriff’s deputies to discover approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine worth an estimated value of $5,500 at an apartment in Mauriceville.
