The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a catastrophic major accident on Interstate 10 (mile marker 835) near Hamshire, Texas, on Nov. 22. The accident, which happened at around 8 a.m., appears to have involved more than 150 cars in an accident scene with numerous injuries. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Jefferson County Sheriff Department deputies, and medical personnel responded to the crash scene.

Suzette Ratcliff is on a mission. Her mission is to spread love through acts of kindness while keeping her daughter’s memory alive.

In honor of her daughter Rachel Ann Clark, Suzette started a Facebook page called Real Acts of Compassion, where she asks people to reach out to help others and challenges them to make a difference in the community. On the morning of Sept. 17, 2009, Rachel Clark left to go to work at Sertino’s. She would never return home.

The McDonalds restaurant at 190 Interstate 10 in Beaumont had to temporarily close its doors in early November for a remodeling project to create a new look spreading across the hamburger chain’s locations nationwide.

During this remodel, this location launched a new program called “OPERATION A.R.C.H.” During the remodel, store employees donated their time to local charities from Nov. 8-16. The charities include the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program, the Southeast Texas Food Bank and Goodwill.

When Chef Rafael Ruiz, owner of Finch Hutton Restaurant in Nederland, scheduled the grand opening of Tibideaux’s New Orleans Kitchen on Calder Avenue in Beaumont, he wanted to do something special. Encouraged by the popularity of his exquisite French/American cuisine, Ruiz was expanding his offerings to introduce his own twist on traditional New Orleans fare at this new casual, family-oriented restaurant in Beaumont.

The Arc of Greater Beaumont held its annual Thanksgiving Feast for Arc members Thursday, Nov. 15, at St. Giles Living Centers in Beaumont. Arc members gathered to see old friends and to enjoy delicious holiday fare. Attendees were asked to write down something for which they are thankful on paper turkeys at each place setting on the tables. Caitlin Kruger, office manager for Arc, said they like to have events each month for Arc members 16 and older. “We do something different every month,” Kruger said. “Thanksgiving is in November, so we wanted to have a feast.

Christmas morning is filled with happy times from many a childhood memory. But with a troubled economy and families all across America barely scraping by to afford necessities, this Christmas might not produce the same warm fuzzy feelings for children hoping to find something from “Santa” under the tree come Dec. 25.
Fortunately for kids in Southeast Texas, first responders and volunteer agencies from all over the region are putting in work now so that no child will have to go a Christmas without a visit from the man who is rumored to know when the youths have been “naughty or nice.”

Beaumont Independent School District trustees met with their attorneys behind closed doors six months ago to discuss how the group could be collectively unaware of a stipulation in new superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois’ contract allowing a mandatory base salary percentage increase for the $215,000-a-year administrator. The increase, according to the contract signed May 1 by Chargois and BISD officials, is required to be greater than or equal to the same percentage raise given to teachers in the district.

Sanaz Alasti, assistant professor of criminal justice at Lamar University and an Iran native, has been invited to present her research at the fifth seminar organized by the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences, in co-operation with the NATO School. This year’s seminar will focus on “Shari’a Law and Military Operations” in the Middle East.
