Toxicology report says KFDM anchor was intoxicated

A toxicology report on late KFDM anchor Bill Leger indicates that he had a blood alcohol level of .26, three times the legal limit of .08 allowed by the state of Louisiana, according to Trooper Stephen Hammons, public information officer for Louisiana State Police.

Leger was killed in a crash early Saturday morning, Dec. 22, 2012, that occurred on LA Highway 93 near Gateau Road. He was entering a curve when his vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. He overcorrected to the left, which caused his vehicle to rollover. The vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane of LA Highway 93. Clint Melancon, 52, of Carencro, La., was driving a 1998 Ford north on LA Highway 93 and struck Leger’s vehicle. Leger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by the Lafayette Parish Coroner.

Melancon’s blood alcohol level tested over the legal limit, and he was booked into the Lafayette Parish jail for a first-offense DWI, authorities said.

Hammons said the crash is still under investigation.

“There’s still things that we’re waiting for from the coroner’s office — the coroner’s report and other things — in order to try and make a determination at which point he died,” Hammons said. “We want to make sure we conduct a very thorough investigation and however long that takes in order to make sure we have answered as many questions as are possible for a crash, that’s how long it’s going to take us to complete that investigation.”
