Skeletal remains found in Labelle

Jefferson County officials are reporting the skeletal remains found on a rancher's property in Labelle could are in close proximity to where they were searching for a missing in teen in August and may belong to Sharon West.

A skull was found at about 11:30 a.m. Friday morning and a further search by responding deputies resulted in the recovery of additional skeletal remains. It is not confirmed yet whether the remains found in fact belong to West, who was last seen July 30, but the property where the skull was found was located about two miles from where deputies spent weeks searching for the missing 15-year-old.

Searchers canvassed the area at the time but dense underbrush hindered their efforts at times. It is possible the search was within a few yards of where the remains were found.

Photos of items found within in the area of the skeletal remains were identified by Sharon's mother Sandra West as belonging to the missing girl. Sandra identified a pair of pajama boxer shorts and glasses shown to her as similar articles that Sharon wore prior to her disappearance

The sheriff's office says no positive identification has been made to and they are currently awaiting comparison of dental records and DNA to the remains to confirm whether the skeletal remains found are Sharon's.

The Examiner will have more information as it becomes available.
