Quarter horse season opens April 26 at Delta Downs
The 2013 quarter horse season will begin Friday, April 26, at Delta Downs in nearby Vinton, La., with a first post time of 6:45 p.m. After this weekend, live racing will occur Wednesday-Saturday.
Opening weekend is full of action as April 26 will see two stakes races and two sets of trials for the Old South Derby with 18 horses competing in Races 4-5, and those with the Top 10 fastest times will move on to the May 18final.
Race 7 on the April 26 card will be the $50,000, restricted Grade 3 Vinton Stakes for 3-year-old Louisiana bred horses competing at 400 yards. Intriguing Jess Blue won last year’s event in 19.606 (97 speed index). The complete field along with jockey/trainer is as follows:
1. Fast Dashin Man (Jesse Chavis/Lanny Keith)
Lightly raced 3-year-old is 1-4 but has hit the board in 3 of 4 starts and last competed in October 2012 at Evagenline Downs.
2. Freakin Big Time (Antonio Alberto/Barbara Alcantara)
Claimed for $5,000 last start, which was a win in December at Evangeline Downs, has 2 wins in 6 starts as of this running.
3. Jethro Almitey (Jose Vegas/Justin Haug)
This gelding has 2 win in 8 starts, and both victories were at Delta Downs. He last ran fifth in the $84,000 Mardi Gras Derby in March at Louisiana Downs.
4. Lets Play Yacht Sea (Saul Ramirez/Miguel Rodriguez)
Very consistent runner with 3 wins in 9 starts yet has hit the board in 7 of those 9 starts. This filly ran third in a $40,000 stakes last November and was fourth in the $252,000 Lassie Futurity last May at Delta.
5. Lets Jess Do It (David Alvarez/Bobby Martinez)
This gelding is a stakes winner, as he won the $29,000 LQHBA Invitational last September, then finished second in the Mardi Gras Derby.
6. T Boy C (Raul Ramirez Jr./Miguel Rodriguez)
This runner leads the field in earnings with $119,398 and comes to Delta after winning the Mardi Gras Derby. Also placed in multiple stakes including a 4th in the $1 million LQHBA Futurity last year.
7. Pantherisland (Bobby Ranson/Dave Correll)
Only 2 wins in 8 starts. Don’t think this filly can get this distance.
8. Big Timer (Gilbert Ortiz/Vann Haywood)
This runner has improved over his last two starts, but is just 1-6.
9. Fance Oak Tree (Alfonso Lujan/Erasmo Hernandez)
This gelding ran third in the Mardi Gras Derby and was flying late to make up two spots. He is 0-4 at Delta Downs but has hit the board in 3 of those starts.
10. Heza Fast Glass (John Hamilton/Fructuoso Huitron)
Won two races back at 400 yards at Evangeline Downs then took a 5-month layoff and ran sixth in his last start at 250 yards at Louisiana Downs.
$20,000 Delta Dash
The $20,000 Delta Dash will be Race 9 on the April 26 card. The race is restricted to older Louisiana bred horses going a short 250 yards. Eyesa Western won last year’s race in 13.041 (101 speed index).
1. Logans Dash (Jesse Chavis/Guadalupe Garza Jr.)
This filly won a $20,000 stakes in Florida last year but is 0-8 since.
2. Sheezespeciallyfast (Donald Watson/Kevin Broussard)
The team of Watson-Broussard is always tough. This filly is 6-22 but has hit the board in 4 of 6 starts at Delta Downs.
3. Dashnbug (Danny Lavergne/Judy Beavin)
This mare leaves quick out of the gate, which you need at short distances, but has won just 4 of 31 starts.
4. Wacky and Restless (Saul Ramirez/Fructuoso Huitron)
This mare was a winner in her last start, which was 250 yards at Louisiana Downs. Will definitely be in the mix at the finish line.
5. Champions Passage (Antonio Alberto/Randy Hebert)
This runner won his last three starts and has hit the board in 7 of 10 lifetime starts.
6. Rumbling Knight (Eleazar Guillen/Anireal Chavira)
This horse is worth taking a chance on. He’s 4-11 lifetime and usually fires out of the gate rather quickly. Could get a good price on him as well.
7. Feudist (Bobby Ransom/Jose Garcia)
This filly is very quick out of the gate and has won her last three starts. Major player.
8. Aint Eye Corona (Gilbert Ortiz/Anthony Arey)
Gelding was claimed for $10,000 three races ago, but he’s 3-23 lifetime and 0-4 at 250 yards.
9. The Lizzard King (John Hamilton/Heath Taylor)
This runner leads the field in earnings with $108,224. It will be his first start in 2013 and last raced Nov. 17, winning the $50,000 Evangeline Downs Derby.
10. Sparrow Contender (Santos Carrizales/Fructuoso Huitron)
This colt will make his first start at Delta, but comes to Vinton well prepared. He’s 5-15 lifetime and has won 2 of his last 3 starts, and both were stakes races.
John Alleman Memorial
The race card for April 27 will have six trials for the Old South Futurity, which will also be held May 18, as 55 entries vie for 10 spots. Also, Race 9 will be the $50,000 restricted Grade 3 John Alleman Memorial for older Louisiana bred horses at 350 yards. Taylors Toastin Papa won last year in 17.480 (95 speed index).
1. Zupers Quick Dash (David Alvarez/Bobby Martinez)
This veteran horse used to own a track record at Delta Downs and is a multiple stakes winner. Will be making his first start since December.
2. Blue Louisiana Jolla (Randy Edison/Elroy Potts Sr.)
This 8-year-old gelding has earned more than $300,000, but he hasn’t won in more than 3 years. Had trouble in his last start, so you may use him on your exotic tickets.
3. Louisiana Rangler (Gilbert Ortiz/Louis Lee)
Gilbert Ortiz choses this horse instead of the 9, Coors Select, and interesting move as Ortiz has never been aboard this 6-year-old gelding. It will be the horse’s first start since last July.
4. Martini Mountain (Danny Lavergne/Paul Rigdon)
This runner leads this field in earnings with $398,897. His last win came in December where he claimed the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Stakes at the Fair Grounds at 440 yards on a muddy surface. He’s only 1-9 at Delta.
5. Haystretcher (Alfonso Lujan/Vann Haywood)
Super consistent runner winning 6 of 12 at Delta Downs and is 4-15 at this distance. He’s finished second in his last two starts, so expect him to be competing for the lead at the finish line.
6. Lil Jess Oak (Donald Watson/Kevin Broussard)
You always respect this jockey/trainer tandem. This gelding was a winner in his last start and has won 2-4 starts at Delta, which includes a stakes win last year.
7. No Playing Games (Lucas Constantin/Kelli Smith)
This gelding has won four of his last five starts and comes to Delta after finishing third behind Haystretcher in February, losing by only a neck.
8. Political Option (Jesse Chavis/Kenny Roberts)
This gelding comes to Delta after winning the $35,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Jesse Chavis will be aboard for the first time. John Hamilton had been in the saddle his last three trips, but will ride the 9 – Coors Select.
9. Coors Select (John Hamilton/Alvin Brossette)
Jockey Gilbert Ortiz has been aboard the last 10 trips but selected another horse in this race (Louisiana Rangler). With more than $312,000 in the bank, this gelding has finished no worse than third in his last four starts, which were all stakes races.
10. A Solid Dash (Jarod Deschamp-Javier Contreras)
This gelding has hit the board in 4 of 8 starts at Delta with just one win. Did win his last start at Louisiana Downs back on March 26, and has run fourth behind Political Option, Haystretcher and Martini Mountain, who are also in this race.
