Police capture Knights Inn murder suspect

Cameron Frank

A Louisiana woman is dead and one man is in custody after police made the first arrest in an Aug. 20 murder at Knights Inn.

According to a BPD press release, police responded to the Knights Inn at 4085 I-10 S. at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, to find a female with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Police also found a male victim with a non-life-threatening head injury.

Police said the two victims were registered guests at the hotel who were caught in an attempted robbery and subsequent altercation. During that altercation, the female was shot and the male hit in the head.

Police identified the deceased victim as Kendra Crump, a 27-year-old resident of Monroe, La. An autopsy was scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Initially, police sought the whereabouts of two African-American male suspects.

But on Friday, Aug. 23, detectives obtained two warrants for Cameron Charles Frank, 23, of Beaumont. Judge Nancy Beaulieu signed two warrants for Frank, the first with a $150,000 bond for aggravated robbery, the second with a $750,000 bond for capital murder.

Less than a week later, on Aug. 28, police caught up to Frank, who was hiding in a garage apartment, according to BPD spokeswoman Carol Riley.

“We received a tip that he was at an address on Spruce,” Riley said.

Due to the violent nature of Frank’s alleged crime, SWAT and other officers surrounded the Spruce apartment, but Frank eventually surrendered without incident.

As he was led to the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday, Aug. 28, Frank said nothing to reporters at the scene. Riley did not comment on whether Frank was cooperating with police.

“He was given an opportunity to tell his side,” Riley said.

Police searching for the second suspect in the murders said he could be hiding in Louisiana, but in a press release Wednesday said a person of interest was captured on an unrelated charge in Houston where detectives there will determine his involvement in the Knights Inn murder.

“We’ve known for a while who it was. We were just trying to locate the suspect,” Riley said. “And with the other one possibly from Louisiana, sometimes it will take a little longer to get the identity."
