PA teacher charged with injury to a child
A Port Arthur teacher has come under fire for allegedly beating and choking an 11-year-old Port Arthur child.
Ruby H. Gunner was indicted by a grand jury May 16 on a charge of injury to a child and was booked on a $50,000 bond.
Gunner, a teacher at Franklin Elementary School for more than 30 years, has denied the allegations.
According to prosecutors familiar with the case, Gunner pushed the 11-year-old and punched him several times before the fight went to the floor and the boy was allegedly choked.
Gunner is claiming self defense and will likely plead not guilty, according to her attorney.
She has been suspended without pay by the Port Arthur Independent School District as a result of the indictment.
Gunner’s case is set for trial Oct. 16 in Judge John Stevens’ Criminal District Court.
